Not that it’s any surprise. If you ask me, all the parties do is separate one type of scoundrel from another. Sure, I’ve got my favorites, but deep down, they’re all out for their own best interest. Of course, it’s disguised as what they say is in the best interest of their constituents. In this case, there was a motion on the floor yesterday to amend the most recent farm bill to have a $40,000 cap per individual on farm subsidies. It failed miserably with 86 of the Republican Representatives voting against it. The current bill has a number of $60,000.

Of course, Republicans generally come from a red state and most of the red states are farming states. So, there is an argument that could be made that the decrease could harm the representatives constituents. What they should be doing, however, is reducing their states dependence on the Government’s handouts. It would make each of their states stronger and would better their economy in the long run. Oh, and it might just help the food crisis that we are enduring right now since some of those farmers would stop plowing under crops because the subsidy they can get is larger than the value of the crop.

Subsidies are merely welfare payments for farmers. And like Welfare, Subsidies started out with a noble purpose. That purpose has been perverted and exploited until all it is now is a good way for 99% of our farmers to extort the Government for all it’s worth. Reducing the subsidies would surely hurt a few farmers, but not all of them and certainly not a majority of them. I think we’d all be surprised what would happen if we got rid of them all-together.
