Party Merge?

In his acceptance speech, Obama mentioned twice President Lincoln.  And mentioned also, the Republican party.  It brought the following question to mind:

Based on the current party situation wherein the Republican party is becoming more liberal, is the mention of Lincoln and the Republican party the beginning of an eminent merging of the Democrat and Republican parties?  A unilateral, nonpartisan power grab?

Isn’t that a scary thought?  Makes me think twice about my political affiliations.  Perhaps I’ll go the same way as Jake after all.

You are of course welcome to join. I see the repubs not learning from this and continuing their death march into irrelevancy. Which leaves them with the Liberal Repubs, Religious Repubs, Fiscal Conservative Repubs, etc. You get the point - it is a broken party that is either going to fracture and flog itself to death, or continue on this liberal light trend.

Either way - I gave up hope for it (as the post you linked to goes into) and feel that even though 3rd parties traditionally don’t have a strong showing, the Libertarian Party more strongly reflects my beliefs. The GOP isn’t going to again for many, many years - if ever.
